FIELD STUDY 2 - DAY 9: In Teaching, a small act can have a big impact
I came to school at exactly 7:00 am, when the flag ceremony was starting. The usual ceremonies have been processed, and immediately after the morning routine, I have gone directly to the section of my cooperating teacher, Ma’am Jenny T. Dumagan, in Grade 9-Eris. As I have entered the classroom, the students have greeted me, "Good morning, sir!" and I have been delightful since it feels so motivating that I start my assistance to my CT with a smile. Ma'am Jenny instructed her 9-Eris students to have a sit plan and explained her rule regarding seating arrangements. After her instructions and explanations, she has informed me that the reason they are not in the flag ceremony is because the school principal just scheduled what sections will attend on a specific day, and Grade 9 Eris is not scheduled today.
Minutes have passed. Ma'am Dumagan left a task for me, which is to encode all the scores of her students and create an excel file for the grading sheets of her section. Making grading sheets in Excel is not actually new to me; I have encountered such a file and made it because my mother is a teacher and she asked me to make it, and I did. This task reminded me that knowing how to use computers and manipulate various types of files is a valuable skill for a teacher to have.A teacher who is well-versed in a gadget or other technology will have an advantage and will be able to perform tasks related to it more easily. So, as a future teacher, I need to maintain this capability and computer skills because they will be useful in my future career, allowing things to run smoothly without those heavy skill-driven problems.
I did it in a short span of time, making all eight subjects’ grade sheets for Grade 9-Eris. This does not benefit the light tasks of my cooperating teacher (CT), but it is actually an opportunity for me to be exposed to them and experience the responsibility of a teacher. Since it was easily and immediately done, I have also been able to start encoding the scores of some sections handled by my CT. This includes grades 7 (Everlasting), 7 (Newton), 8 (Beryl), and 10 (Diego Silang). All of this was accomplished while learning and experiencing it in a real-life setting.
This day has not been tiring due to all of the tasks I have completed, but it does reflect the idea to which I can learn and the things I need to recognize as a student teacher. These accomplishments I have achieved are not a futile goal but a stepping stone towards this journey in field study. "You are in the real world; you must act and be one to be where you should be," she says. Yes, there is pressure, and it was precisely exhausting, but directing me to where I should go and experiencing what I should do are the price of this worthwhile voyage. Go for it! You have dove; you learned!
